Texts: Sermon Only
Isaiah 53:4-12
Psalm 91:9-16
Hebrews 5:1-10
Mark 10:32-45

Jesus in our gospel reading has a better kind of glory and recognition for us! Instead of chasing after the world's recognition, Jesus says, “follow me and receive the glory of the kingdom of God.” God the Father does not play favourites, as James and John found out, and the Father gives ALL of us the chance to be GREAT in his kingdom - not just the few he appoints as martyrs! God gives glory to all those who SERVE, starting with his Son Jesus, who made himself slave of all, and gave his life as a ransom for many. God glorified Jesus by RAISING him from the dead, and by making him the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

We who follow Jesus, have his servant spirit within us. He lives through us to continue to serve – to continue to show us opportunities where we can make a significant difference in the quality of people's lives, especially our families and the people who serve US. He lives through us to continue to serve – to show the love of God to people in acts of kindness and humility to those around us. He lives through us to continue to serve – to give people hope of eternal life thanks to his act of martyrdom – the only Messiah required – as we share his Word. And while the world will not give us glory and recognition based on humble, simple serving, OUR glory comes from God. Our glory will be to be raised with Jesus!

Gracious God, help us to serve. Give us opportunities to reach out and show your love, and guide us to be great people in your kingdom, in Jesus' name, amen.
